The best family-friendly mobile puzzle games
Games rated for general audiences that we would happily hand to a child.
The App Store's age rating system is a blunt instrument, but the 4+ rating does mean something useful: no inappropriate content, no hard-to-dismiss interstitials, and (crucially) no in-app purchase flows aimed at children. The list below collects games that hold a 4+ rating and a high enough average score that we would feel comfortable handing the phone to a kid in a restaurant.
We have been deliberately strict about the editorial cut. A game that is technically rated 4+ but whose monetisation is built around forcing players to watch ads to continue is not a family-friendly game in any practical sense — that is the kind of mobile experience that turns kids into compulsive ad-skippers. The games here are the opposite: thoughtful, gentle, with monetisation models that an adult would not be ashamed to step in and approve.
Many of the titles are puzzle classics in clean, modern implementations: sudoku, jigsaws, word searches, simple match boards. A few are gentle simulation and farming games that reward patient play. None are violent, none are sexualised, none are designed to manufacture rage. If you are putting together a small library of mobile games for a long flight or a quiet afternoon with a child, this is a much better starting point than the App Store's family category, which is mostly an algorithmic mess.
