Hidden gems — under-the-radar puzzle games we love
High-rated puzzle and casual titles that have flown under the App Store algorithm.
The App Store's ranking algorithm is brutal: a few hundred ratings is not enough to push a game into the charts, and without chart placement most titles never accumulate the audience that would push them up. The result is a layer of legitimately excellent games stuck in the four-figure-review purgatory — well-loved by the people who found them, invisible to everyone else.
This is the list of those games. To qualify for inclusion a title needs an average rating of 4.5 or higher, but a review count between 200 and 5,000 — high enough that the rating is statistically meaningful, low enough that the game is clearly under-discovered. Most are passion projects from small studios. Some are old titles whose audience moved on. A few are weird genre-benders that the platform's taxonomy never quite knew where to put.
What ties them together is that they are all worth your time. We have played enough of the chart-toppers to recognise the shape of a real one, and the entries below have that shape: thoughtful design, fair monetisation, the kind of small decisions that only happen when a developer actually cares. None of them will be on the homepage of the App Store. Most will be uninstalled by the next time you look. If something here grabs you, install it now and tell a friend — that is the only way these games ever escape the algorithm.
