Of all the easy-to-measure signals on the App Store, recency of update is probably the most under-appreciated — it tells you that someone is still showing up to work on this title, fixing the bugs you reported and shipping the seasonal content that keeps the experience fresh.
The list below cuts the database down to titles that have shipped a meaningful update in the last sixty days, hold a 4.3+ rating, and have enough review volume to be statistically interesting. It is a snapshot of the puzzle and casual genre's currently-active inventory — the games where the developer relationship is alive and the experience is being actively maintained.
We like this list as a starting point for new installs. A game that has not been updated in six months may be wonderful, but it is also a coin flip on whether the next iOS release will break it. Anything on this page is, by contrast, currently being shepherded through the platform's churn. The ranking blends editorial weight with the PixelRank score, so the games at the top are both well-loved and currently being looked after — the safest possible bet on a new install.
